Foundation for Agility Training

Tauranga Dog Training Club offers a series of courses to progress you and your dog from Basic Home Obedience through to being ready to take on the beginnings of agility training. Registration for these courses are by means of progression from the first Basic Home Obedience class. If you have already attended formal training, please message us via our contact page on this website to discuss which course would best fit you and your dog.

At the completion of each of the following courses, a set of criteria needs to be met before progressing on.

Courses offered are:

Basic Home Obedience – 6 weeks

This course is open to dogs and puppies 3 months and over. The course objective is to introduce and teach basic obedience skills through positive reinforcement for dealing with everyday situations.

Enrolments occur each term, see Basic Home Obedience Enrolment Tab for current enrolments

Foundation for Agility Courses:  All the following courses have a set of criteria to meet before being ready to progress to the next course.

Fun and Focus – 8 weeks

This course is all about setting the handler and dog up for success by building handler focus, food drive, toy drive (an extremely important training aid) along with consistent and positive training habits.  We want the handler and dog to have fun as they learn together.

Foundation Flatwork – 8 weeks

This course also focuses on developing a positive working relationship between the handler and dog.  Basic agility handling skills are introduced on the flat, and through simulated jumps (using wings with no poles) and short tunnels.  Foundation contact and weave training also begins here.

Foundation Jumping – 8 weeks

This course introduces the handler and dog to all jumping equipment.  Weave and contacting training is progressed and they begin to negotiate short jump sequences.  In this course the handler gets to put their handling skills from the previous class into practice over jumps.  They learn to stay connected with their dog whilst negotiating various agility obstacles.  At the conclusion of this course membership is offered to those wishing to continue on to the next courses.
